Cooking Verbs

These cooking verbs are Transitive Verbs. The action transfers from the subject to the object. In Potawatomi, there must be agreement with the verb, the demonstrative, and the animacy and plurality of the object.

The singular demonstrative must accompany the singular version of an object.

Example: Ni pi je i wawen?

Likewise for the plural example: Ni pi je ni wawnon?

The same rule applies to animate objects.

Singular: Ni pi je o gigo?

Plural: Ni pi je gi gigosek?

Some more phrases:

Animate:

Ngi zaskowana o gigo

Ngi zaskokwanak gi gigosek

Ngi bidapkowébna o bidi

Ngi bidapkowébnak gi gigosek

Ngi gbashma o bidi

Inanimate:

Ngi zaskokwaden i wiyas

Ngi zaskokwadanen ni pekwasen

Ngi bidakowébnan i wiyas

Ngi bidapkowébnanen ni pekwasen

Ngi gbaton i wiyas

Ngi gbatonen ni pekwasen

When you add wiyas to the end of gokosh, it becomes inanimate.

Example: Ni pi je i gokosh wiyas?

The same is true if any meat part is added on to the end/suffix.

Example: Ni pi je ni gokosh pekwasen?

The same rule applies to all animals that we eat.
